What the coil unit is doing

Individually pocketed coils move independently, so weight on one side of the bed does not lever the other side upward. That is what gives hybrids their motion isolation and their edge support, and it is why they hold up better than foam over the years: steel does not soften the way foam eventually does. Higher coil counts and thinner-gauge wire generally mean a more responsive, contouring feel; heavier gauge means firmer and more supportive.

The comfort layer decides the feel

• Memory foam over coils sinks in and cradles, which suits side sleepers who want obvious pressure relief at the shoulder and hip.
• Latex over coils is springier and keeps you higher on the surface, which sleeps cooler and suits people who dislike the hugged feeling.
