Pocketed coils versus a traditional innerspring

In an older innerspring, the coils are tied together with wire. Push down in one spot and a wide area moves, which is what makes those beds feel bouncy in the bad way and transmit every roll-over across the mattress. Pocketed coils are individually encased, so support becomes local: the coil under your hip compresses while the coil four inches away barely moves. You get closer contouring without giving up the support and airflow that springs do better than foam.

Who this build suits

• Couples, especially when one person is a light sleeper or works a different shift. Motion isolation is the single biggest reason people upgrade, and mattresses built for couples lean heavily on this construction.
• Anyone waking up sore. Most pocketed coil beds are zoned, with firmer coils through the middle third, which is why they show up so often in mattresses for back pain relief.
• Hot sleepers. Air moves through a coil unit in a way it cannot move through dense foam. Pair that with a breathable cover and you have the basis of most cooling mattresses for hot sleepers.
• Heavier sleepers and anyone who dislikes the sunken feeling of memory foam and wants to stay more on top of the bed.

Coil count is not the number that matters

Manufacturers advertise coil counts because they are easy to print, but a higher number does not automatically mean a better bed. Coil gauge, how the unit is zoned, and what sits above it matter more. A thinner-gauge coil flexes more easily and feels softer; a thicker gauge holds up more weight and feels firmer. The comfort layers on top, whether that is memory foam, latex or a quilted pillow top, decide most of what you actually feel in the first minute of lying down. Judge the bed as a whole rather than the spec sheet.

Where the pocketed coil sits in the wider range
