About Soft
Soft is about the top layers, not the whole bed
A well-made plush mattress has three or more inches of conforming comfort material over a firm, supportive base. The top gives; the base does not. When people say a soft mattress hurt their back, they usually mean the base gave out too, which is what happens on cheap all-foam builds and on any mattress that has aged past its useful life.
Who tends to prefer soft
- Dedicated side sleepers, especially anyone with shoulder pain or a bony frame.
- Lighter sleepers, who do not weigh enough to compress a medium mattress into contouring for them.
- People who want the enveloped, cradled feeling that memory foam is known for.
- Anyone stepping down from a mattress that felt punishingly hard, though medium is often the better landing point.
The two trade-offs to know about
Soft beds sleep warmer, because more of your body is surrounded by insulating material. If you also run hot, look for plush models built as cooling hybrids rather than as deep all-foam. And soft beds are harder to move around on, which matters if you have mobility issues or share the bed; combination and stomach sleepers will generally be better served by medium or firm.
Test it lying on your side
Spend at least five minutes on your side and check that your hip has not dropped below your shoulder line. Plush should feel like being held, not like sinking. Our Richmond and Katy showrooms have soft models from most of the brands we carry set up for exactly this comparison, with financing and local delivery available.
