How Often Should You Rotate or Flip Your Mattress?

How Often Should You Rotate or Flip Your Mattress?

Patrick Dhital

Have you ever noticed your mattress starting to sag or lose support, wondering if rotating or flipping it would help?

I’ve been asked this question countless times, and honestly, I used to ignore it myself. It seemed like an old-fashioned idea. Then one day, I realized my mattress had clear indents where I'd been sleeping. Not ideal.

What's the Difference Between Rotating and Flipping?

Before we get into frequency, let’s clear something up. Flipping means turning your mattress upside down, switching the side you sleep on. But rotating is just spinning it head-to-foot. Almost every mattress can benefit from regular rotation, but flipping isn't always an option.

If you’re using a modern mattress—like one of our hybrid mattresses—you probably can't flip it. These mattresses have a dedicated sleep surface, designed specifically for comfort. Flipping it wouldn’t do you any favors.

So, How Often Should You Rotate Your Mattress?

Rotating your mattress every 3 to 6 months is usually enough. It prevents uneven wear and helps maintain comfort and support. But some mattresses might need it less often. I personally recommend rotating every time you change your sheets with the seasons—that makes it easy to remember.

For mattresses like memory foam models, rotation can significantly extend their lifespan. Because memory foam contours closely, rotating prevents body impressions from becoming permanent.

If you’re curious, here's an excellent guide that confirms rotating is beneficial for nearly every mattress type.

Do You Still Need to Flip Your Mattress?

The old advice was always “flip every mattress,” but that’s changed. Most newer mattresses, especially premium options like innerspring models, are one-sided. If you own one of these, flipping won’t help—it could even make things worse.

But if you're sleeping on an older, double-sided mattress, flipping it every 3 to 6 months is a great way to even out wear. It distributes pressure and keeps the mattress supportive longer. Not sure if your mattress can be flipped? Check your manufacturer's guidelines or just ask me. I’m always here to help.

Mattress Rotation Tips That Actually Help

Ever tried rotating a king-size mattress alone? Trust me, it's not fun. Get someone to help you if possible—your back will thank you. Rotate the mattress 180 degrees so the head becomes the foot. Simple as that.

To make rotation easier, I recommend clearing everything off the bed first. Pillows, sheets, even the mattress protector. It reduces friction and prevents damage.

Speaking of protecting your mattress, accessories can make a real difference. Consider investing in mattress protectors or toppers from our accessory collection to keep your bed fresh longer.

Signs It's Definitely Time to Rotate or Flip

If you're seeing clear indentations or feeling unsupported during sleep, rotate immediately. I ignored these signs once, thinking they weren't a big deal. Big mistake. Rotating quickly restored some comfort, but I eventually upgraded.

Also, if you sleep with a partner and notice uneven wear, rotation becomes even more crucial. Regularly rotating helps distribute weight evenly and prevents deep impressions.

Why Some Mattresses Shouldn't Be Rotated

It's rare, but some mattresses—especially those with targeted support zones or advanced technology—aren't meant to be rotated. If you own something like our adjustable mattresses with adjustable bases, rotating might disrupt their comfort features.

Always double-check your manufacturer’s instructions. If you’re unsure, I'm here to walk you through it.
